Report From Washington - May 5, 2012

National Day of Prayer Special Report 

On the National Day of Prayer my morning began with a prayer group on the Supreme Court Plaza. Our group actually had permission to pray, as long as our group did not constitute a "demonstration." The line between the two is very ill defined. I was joined by several activists on Capitol Hill including Peggy Nienaber of Faith and Action as well as Rev. Patrick Mahoney. After praying for the nation we had the opportunity to have breakfast at the Supreme Court cafeteria where we joined together in saying grace before eating.

The National Day of Prayer was changed to the first Thursday in May during President Ronald Reagan's last year in office in 1988. The original law, signed by President Harry Truman, did not specify a date which caused some confusion over several decades.

This past Thursday thousands of public prayer meetings were held across the nation including one here on Capitol Hill. The national meeting was held in the Caucus Room of the Cannon House Office Building just a block from the Capitol Building itself. For the sixth year in a row the host for the National Day of Prayer in the Capitol complex was Congressman Robert Aderholt of Alabama. In my capacity as chairman of Government Is Not God -PAC, I endorsed and helped to elect Robert Aderholt to Congress back in 1996. He has been working to further family values since his election.

Also present during the three hours of prayer in the Caucus Room were Congressman Randy Forbes of Virginia and his wife, Shirley. Congressman Forbes, also elected with the help of Government Is Not God - PAC back in 2001, founded the Congressional Prayer Caucus which has 105 members. Each week upon their return to the Hill the members of the Prayer Caucus meet in Room 219 in the Capitol Building itself to pray. A national movement in State houses for prayer caucuses has begun following Congressman Forbes' example.

At this year's prayer meeting Congressman Forbes shared miraculous events which occurred in his life as a result of prayer, including the survival of his first child despite doctors telling him that he and his wife needed to say their goodbyes to their newborn son.

The overall chairman of the National Day of Prayer event in Washington each year is Shirley Dobson, the wife of Dr. James Dobson. The military and every branch of government was represented -- except for the Administration -- as President Obama did not send a representative. One of the highlights of the day was the Azula Pacific University all men's choir which sang several traditional hymns a cappella.

After the National Day of Prayer meeting which lasted from 9:00 AM to noon, I attended a special lunch with Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas for the International Israel Allies Caucus. Congressman Gohmert spoke of his most recent trip to Israel and his meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu. (Note: It was Congressman Gohmert who initiated the recommendation that led to Speaker Boehner inviting Prime Minister Netanyahu to speak to a joint session of Congress in 2010.) The congressman spoke of the continued need for prayer, but also reminded us that while Israel is mentioned as being part of End Time prophecy, the United States is not. He said nations that do not stand with Israel should not expect their God to protect them.

At 2:00 PM on the National Day of Prayer I made my way to a meeting at the Capitol Visitors' Center (CVC) which sits below the actual Capitol Building grounds. While most people believe this is merely a tourist entrance since the shooting at Tom Delay's office some years ago, it is actually an official business entrance as well. Also unknown to tourists is the fact that the CVC has both House and Senate meeting rooms that can be reserved only by Members of Congress for their use or the use of their constituents for special events. Full catering service is available.

Congressman Todd Akin of Missouri had arranged a conference room to be used by several groups led by Rev. Rick Scarborough of Texas for "40 Days to Save America." This is a prayer and fasting campaign to begin on September 28th and run through Election Day, November 6th. The object is to pray and fast for America to turn back to a godly path and to elect godly leaders.

THE MIKE HUCKABEE SHOW 

I was scheduled to appear the Fox News Channel's Mike Huckabee Show this weekend, however, while on the train to New York I received a call that I had been "bumped" for a breaking news segment on pro-life Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng who was forced out of the U.S. Embassy by Secretary of State Clinton when she arrived in China to promote the sale of more U.S. Debt. (Without Chinese loans the United States would be forced to disband the entire military.) Because I was in transit to New York the decision was made to tape my segment which centers on my book, My Life Without God, and show it at a later date. The taping will still be done in front of a live audience, and I will post the date of the actual show on the book's Facebook page as soon as it is known. THE PRESIDENCY
OBAMA PROMISES PALESTINIAN STATE IN TWO YEARS - The last time Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was at the White House, President Obama refused to have his picture taken with him and walked out of the meeting to have a hamburger. This week, however, Palestinian "President" Mahmoud Abbas received the royal treatment from Obama with photographers allowed to follow them around the White House. The Egyptian press is reporting from Palestinian sources inside the meetings that Obama committed to forcing the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state within two years. Abbas has no authority over the Gaza strip which is controlled by HAMAS, a terrorist organization. What exactly will he be president of?  
OBAMA AGAINST THE RULE OF LAW? - President Barack Obama has leveled criticism of Arizona's new law that allows police to arrest those in the United States who cannot identify themselves as legal residents. Also, he has ordered the Justice Department headed by radical leftist Eric Holder to "investigate" whether or not Arizona is violating the "civil rights" of the illegal aliens. Keeping this in mind, below is the actual Federal statute regarding alien ID:

"Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d) of this section. Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor _"

It is a Federal crime for an alien in the US not to have proper identification proving status. It is also a crime to enter the United States illegally. President Obama, who is supposed to uphold the law of the land, appears to believe that certain groups have the right to violate federal law.
WHAT KIND OF VOTERS? - In a video commercial for the Democratic Party distributed on the Internet, President Obama said he needs "young people, African Americans, Latinos and women" to help keep Congress in the hands of the Democrats in the November elections. Conspicuously absent from his comments were men, and those on Social Security. The "mainstream" media sees no bias in his call to action. Can you imagine the outrage if Gov. Sarah Palin put out a video commercial calling for "older white guys driving pickups" to vote for Republicans this November? What a striking double standard. Read more

THE CONGRESS

MUSLIMS BLOCK CHRISTIAN LEADERS FROM MILITARY - Invitations for Franklin Graham to speak at the Pentagon's National Day of Prayer event, and also one to Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council to speak at Andrew's Air Force base, have been rescinded for fear some Muslim somewhere would be offended by their presence. Apparently the military is refusing to allow any Christian leader to speak at a base if they have been critical of Islam in anyway. Oddly the military finds no problem with imams who refer to democracy as an "apostate religion" that must be destroyed. Congressman Trent Franks is circulating a letter to other House Members for signatures to send to Secretary of Defense Gates asking him what standards he is using to refuse Christian religious leaders the right to speak on base. NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER - This year, Billy Graham's son, Franklin Graham, is the honorary chair of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. The idea for the law establishing a National Day of Prayer came from a six week Billy Graham revival in Washington, D.C.in 1952. For the fist time there will be a National Day of Prayer observance on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. By law the date is set for the first Thursday in May which is May 6th this year. CULTURE AND RELIGION  

SILENT SURRENDER TO SHARIA - Woodrow Wilson said, "Never murder a man who is committing suicide." As radical Islam stands to the side directing, the West is committing suicide. In the UK, Belgium, France, Canada and even the United States, institutions and governments are surrendering to Islam. It is reminiscent of the post Wolrd War II era when the media saw Communism as inevitable. Today it is Islamic domination that is accepted as inevitable by the media, the corporate world and apparently by Barack Obama. The latest example is the vulgar cartoon series South Park which has in the past vulgarized Jesus Christ and the church in general. But when the South Park creators were warned by a radical Muslim group not to satirize Mohammad, they quickly backed off. The Muslim death threat said: "We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them." Not a threat? Theo Van Gogh was the Dutch TV producer who was murdered for satirizing Mohammad. A really compelling commentary on the South Park surrender to Islam was written by Nina Shea of the Hudson Institute.  
THE CROSS STAYS - the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that a cross serving as a Memorial to WWI veterans in the Mojave Desert can stand! The cross was first erected by the VFW in 1934, and the ACLU began lawsuits to remove it 1999. In 2002 Congress passed legislation designating the cross as a national memorial and stating that no federal funds may be used to remove the cross. Congress then passed legislation transferrnng the land the cross was on to the VFW. Still Federal Courts tried to remove the cross, despite its being transferred to private land. What is amazing is that four Supreme Court Justices felt compelled to vote to remove a memorial to veterans who died in combat. The ACLU's ultimate goal, of course, is to have all religious symbols chiseled off the graves of the dead at Arlington National Cemetery.
VIRGINA CHAPLAINS CAN SAY "JESUS" - Virginia state police chaplains can again refer to Jesus Christ in public prayers thanks to a restriction removed by newly elected Republican Gov. Robert F. McDonnell. The previous Democratic Governor, Tim Kaine, had restricted the practice in 2008, causing six of the then seventeen chaplains to resign in protest. Kaine is a close friend of President Barack Obama.

INTERNATIONAL

IRAN, THE U.N. PROTECTOR OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS? - Is this a total joke? The same week that Iran declared that women who have sun tans will be arrested for dress code violations the United Nations elected the rogue nation to the Commission on the Status of Women. The UN gave a four-year seat on this "human rights body" to a government that stones women to death for adultery and where lashings are used on women judged "immodest." Under Iran's standards a woman with a tan would be lashed. The United States provides most of the funding for the United Nations. Maybe it is time that stopped. 
MUSLIMS MURDER MORE CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA - Nathan Sheleph Dabak and Sunday Gyang Bwede, both of whom worked for "The Light Bearer" Newspaper, a Church of Christ publication, were murdered in Jos by Muslims this week. The killers also stole their belongings and taunted the two mens' relatives using the victims' cell phones. The same church had two other members murdered by Muslims in the past week. Hundreds of Christians in the Jos area have been murdered this year with little or no action from the Nigerian government. Read more.

THE PRESIDENCY

THE GREAT SATAN AND THE LITTLE SATAN - President Barak Obama has bought the big lie. I have heard the lie on numerous occasions as I have traveled on fact finding missions in Islamic nations. The lie is simply this: "We hate America only because America supports Israel's persecution of Palestinians. If America will allow a Palestinian state and 'return' Jerusalem to the Palestinians, then our hatred for America will stop." But wait: In virtually every Islamic pulpit in the world America is the "big Satan" and Israel is the "little Satan." If the "big Satan" turns against the "little Satan," will the "big Satan" suddenly be loved? Of course not. Islamic hatred for America has to do with the core belief in Islam that democracy is an apostate religion that must be destroyed. This is taught in Islamic schools from the capital of Saudi Arabia to the Islamic Academy just outside Washington, DC. The destruction of the "little Satan" is just a step toward the destruction of the "big Satan." But, Obama has bight the lie. He truly believes that handing over half of Jerusalem to Muslims will somehow make Osama Bin Laden love America, and that the Taliban will put down their guns. It is simple, liberal logic: when facing an enemy you just punch out your best friend in hopes that will make the bully leave you alone. After Israel, what comes next, handing over American Jews to Iran for punishment?

THE CONGRESS

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER - Congressman Randy Forbes (R-VA) has stepped forward as the flag bearer in the battle to defend the National Day of Prayer. Federal Judge Barbara Crabb recently declared the observance unconstitutional, declaring it as no different than recognizing "rune magic." Her opinion had nothing to do with the Constitution; it was obviously just secularist and anti-Christian bigotry on her part. Congressman Forbes held a news conference with numerous Members of Congress in defense of the National Day of Prayer which was created by an act of Congress. CULTURE AND RELIGION

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER POLLS - Shortly after Judge Barbara Crabb found the National Day of Prayer to be "unconstitutional," a Rasmussen Poll showed exactly how far out of line she is with the mainstream of thought in the United States. According to Rasmussen just 28% of of adult Americans believe that there should be no National Day of Prayer and 60% believe strongly that there should be. Judge Crabb was appointed by President Jimmy Carter and her core beliefs are similar to the judges now being appointed by President Barack Obama.

PERSECUTION IN IRAN - Until President Jimmy Carter helped to overthrow the secular Western leaning government in Iran, Christians and Jews could live in safety there and practice their religion. There are virtually no Jews remaining in Iran and the persecution of Christians has increased virtually every year since the Mullahs took over Iran and established a state based on Sharia, or Islamic law.   HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH? - The Human Rights Watch (HRW) organization is raising funds in Saudi Arabia, which is a violator of virtually all human rights, by declaring that Israel is "low hanging fruit." To translate, the organization was telling rich Muslims they (HRW) could up their propaganda campaign against Israel in return for larger donations. Over the past years HRW has found nothing wrong with terrorist acts against Israeli civilians, but finds Israel's practice of defending itself a violation of Palisteian "rights." Read more

OBAMA DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM PRAYER - There was no National Day of Prayer event at the White House this year, and no one representing the White House participated in the events of the National Day of Prayer. President Obama did sign a proclamation for the National Day of Prayer. Oddly, the proclamation managed to mention God only once, a far cry from the first proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln. WHAT IS THE TRUTH, NAPOLITANO? - After weeks of intense efforts by social conservatives, veterans, and gun rights groups, Republicans in Congress made a formal demand this week to investigate how and why Homeland Security sent a "rightwing extremist" report to all law enforcement agencies in the country. The report targeted virtually every one of the constituency groups of the Republican Party, except Wall Street. House Minority Leader John A. Boehner said, "She has not explained how this report came about, why she signed off on it, or why she defended it." Read more. The Leadership of the Republican Party acted after several organizations including the Religious Freedom Coalition, placed ads in the Washington Times demanding that Napolitano be forced to apologize or resign.

THE CONGRESS

AMERICA'S RELIGIOUS HERITAGE - Congressman Randy Forbes formed the Congressional Prayer Caucus from a small group of congressmen who met each day to pray in room 219 of the Capitol. The group grew until it turned into a major national "Room 219" movement that gave birth to the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation. As part of the National Day of Prayer, Congressman Forbes has introduced HR 397, a resolution reaffirming America's Religious heritage. I urge you to read and distribute the resolution which clearly outlines the Judeo-Christian heritage of our nation. The Religious Freedom Coalition is an integral part of the movement to pass HR 307. CONGRESS AND NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER - Speaker Nancy Pelosi had not much to say about the National Day of Prayer, but Minority Caucus chairman Mike Pence did. See his one minute National Day of Prayer speech on the floor. Congressman Forbes (R-VA) made a direct reference to President Obama when he stated, "Hopefully we'll have millions of people around the country that will make up for the void we see at the White House on the National Day of Prayer."

THOUGHT CRIMES BILL - On April 30th the homosexual enforcement act (otherwise known as "Hate Crimes") passed the House by a wide margin and headed to the Senate. What can happen if this becomes law? Congressman Randy Forbes gave a striking example: "Had [Hilton] done what he said he would do and stormed that stage and pulled that tiara off [Prejean's] head and [inflicted] bodily harm when he did it, there would not have been one ounce of protection under this piece of legislation for that young girl. But after he did it, if she had in response made a statement back about the very sexual orientation that had led him to his hatred and dislike for her, and if she had responded by slapping him or any physical injury, she would have had the potential of a ten-year federal piece of legislation coming against her." In other words this law creates a special class of people who receive extra protection under the law because of the way they commit perverted sexual acts.Read more

HELLO SARAH PALIN - At the same time that ultra-liberal pro-abortionist Barack Obama was elected president, the American people were actually becoming more conservative on the issue of abortion. Fewer than 50% of women now think abortion should be legal and for the first time the majority of men believe it should be illegal. A Pew Survey revealed that between April, 2008 and April, 2009 more people became anti-abortion. The survey showed that the number of Americans believing in the right to own a gun also increased. Can you believe that many pundits are now saying the Republican Party must become pro-abortion and anti-gun to win more voters? How nuts are they? See poll

ARCHBISHOP OF BAGHDAD SPEAKS OUT - This week I attended a small group roundtable discussion at the Hudson Institute with the Archbishop of Baghdad, Father Jean Benjamin Sleiman. The archbishop discussed the grim situation that exists for Christians in Iraq and made it clear that there was no true security to entice Christian families who had fled, to now return. He reaffirmed what we all already knew, that "...the laws of Sharia are not the same as the laws of democracy." He said that the government, not the church, must provide security for Christians. He explained that, "You can't eliminate the fear after your neighbors are killed". The United States provides no funds for religious minorities (that means Christians) in Iraq. Affirming America's Religious Heritage

Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-VA), Congressman Mike McIntyre D-NC), Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-AL), along with Members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus and faith leaders will hold a bi-partisan press conference affirming America’s religious heritage and announcing the introduction of America’s Spiritual Heritage Resolution (formerly H.Res.888 in the 110^th Congress).

America’s religious heritage has been a heightened point of debate and discussion over the past several weeks. Recently, President Barack Obama claimed while in Turkey that “we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation...,” Newsweek stated that this is “The End of Christian America,” and a PEW study reported that the percentage of people who say they are unaffiliated with any particular faith has doubled in recent years. Members of Congress, along with leaders of faith organizations, will join together in discussing these claims and affirming America’s rich religious heritage.
